Purple phototrophic bacteria granules under high and low upflow velocities

چکیده

The application of granular biomass has enabled energy efficient, high-rate wastewater treatment systems. While initially designed for high-strength treatment, systems can also play a major role in resource recovery. This study focused on the formation purple phototrophic bacteria (PPB) during synthetic treatment. Liquid upflow velocity was applied as driving force granulation. Separate reactors were operated at either low (2-5m h?1) or high (6-9m velocities, with sludge retention times (SRTs) ranging from 5-15d. Reactors produced anaerobic, photo-granules within ~50d. volume index (SVI30) granules 10mL g?1 and average settling rates greater than 30m h?1, both metrics being similar to existing technologies. Granule sizes 2-3mm recorded, however particle size distribution bimodal large floc fraction (70-80% fraction). extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) alginate-like extract (ALE) contents those aerobic biomass. Fluorescence in-situ hybridisation (FISH) imaging identified PPB dispersed throughout very few methanogens an active core. Outer layer morphology substantially different two reactors. high-upflow reactor had outer Chromatiales inner Rhodobacteriales, while low-upflow lower abundances both, limited layering. According 16s gene sequencing, microbial community (40-70%), but dominated by (supporting FISH results), more diverse community. Methanogens seen only small amounts (?8%). crude protein content ~0.60gCP gVS?1 (~0.45gCP gTS?1), that other production growth rapid discrete suggests methods recovery using be diversified include

Dimethylsulphoxide reductase from purple phototrophic bacteria: structures and mechanism(s).

With the exception of nitrogenase, molybdenum is present in a diverse, but coherent group of enzymes which contain a pterin molybdenum cofactor (Moco) as a prosthetic group [l]. This group of enzymes, known as the molybdenum oxotransferases and hydroxylases, carry out a two-electron oxidation-reduction reaction which is linked to oxygen atom transfer to or from a substrate. This is illustrated ...

Bacteriocin from Purple Nonsulfur Phototrophic Bacteria, Rhodobacter capsulatus

To find whether productivity of bacteriocin is controlled between different species under unusual cultural conditions, we used Rhodobacter capsulatus ATCC 17016 as a producer and Rhodopseudomonas palustris ATCC 17003 as an indicator. Rhodobacter capsulatus was cultured under aerobic conditions in the dark in Lascelles medium containing 0.3% Triton X-100. As a result, bacteriocin productivity in...

Differences in Survivability under Starvation Conditions Among Four Species of Purple Nonsulfur Phototrophic Bacteria

Survivability under carbon-starvation conditions was investigated in four species of purple phototrophic bacteria: Rhodopseudomonas palustris, Rhodobacter sphaeroides, Rhodospirillum rubrum, and Rubrivivax gelatinosus. All these test organisms survived longer in the light than in the dark. ATP levels in the cultures were maintained in the light, which indicated that survivability was supported ...

Malate dehydrogenase in phototrophic purple bacteria: purification, molecular weight, and quaternary structure.

The citric acid cycle enzyme malate dehydrogenase was purified to homogeneity from the nonsulfur purple bacteria Rhodobacter capsulatus, Rhodospirillum rubrum, Rhodomicrobium vannielii, and Rhodocyclus purpureus. Malate dehydrogenase was purified from each species by either a single- or a two-step protocol: triazine dye affinity chromatography was the key step in purification of malate dehydrog...
